Types of Decking Materials

Tuesday November 16th, 2021

A well-designed deck is a relatively easy way to increase family living space around your home. It’s like adding on an outdoor room that can be a perfect link for relaxed indoor/outdoor living.

But before building a deck, there are a few things that you need to know such as the guidelines and the materials to use.

In this article, we look at our top three types of Australian decking materials.

1. Treated Pine Decking

Plantation grown treated pine is one of our most popular decking materials. It is cost-effective, durable and versatile, making it a good option for DIYers with small budgets. It can also be painted or stained depending on the desired look.

Keep in mind that treated pine must be oiled yearly to maintain its look.

2. Hardwood Decking

Hardwood decking creates a comfortable, premium feel and looks great in both traditional and modern settings.

There are many varieties of hardwood decking and they are easy to stain to complement an outdoor colour scheme or can be left raw to create a natural, weathered look.

Most Hardwood decking will fade to grey over time which can be prevented by yearly coating. Durable hardwood timber decking is a natural product and can be refinished to its original state with little fuss.

Our popular hardwoods include:

Spotted Gum Decking

Jarrah Decking

Highly sort after for its unique colour ranging rich dark brown to light red.

Silvertop Ash Decking

A lighter coloured timber and popular as a decking material due to its range of natural characteristics and insect trails which creates a completely natural look.

Merbau Decking

Imported Merbau is one of the most popular decking materials in Australia due to its red-brown colour and versatility.

Other types of hardwoods that we stock include Forest Reds, Ironbark, Jarrah, Merbau, Red Mahogany, White Mahogany and Stringybark Decking.

3. Composite Decking

Made from a mix of recycled content, wood fibre and some types of binding agents, composite decking is a good and environmentally friendly alternative to timbers.

While they often cost more than hardwood decking, composite decking yields greater durability and less maintenance as well as product warranties for peace of mind.

Most composite decking requires no regular coating, saving you time and money each year!

Our top composite decking includes:

HardieDeck

Made from James Hardie’s premium fibre cement, the HardieDeck creates a clean look to connect a stylish interior environment with the outdoors, without risking damage from the elements. It can also be painted to suit any colour scheme.
